Solid waste management in Africa

Globaltec ingenieria, Solid waste

Africa’s rapid population growth, increased economic activity and ever-expanding urbanization have led to an unprecedented increase in urban waste on the continent. 🇻🇺
It is estimated that by 2050, the volume of waste will triple from 174 Mtons per year in 2016 to approximately 516 Ms per year across the African continent. In addition, the average waste collection rate in Africa is approximately 55% of all waste materials. In particular, more than 90 per cent of Africa’s waste is disposed of in uncontrolled landfills, which spontaneously burn. 🚛

Recycling activity across the African continent is characterized by poverty, unemployment and socio-economic needs without support from the public and private sectors. Despite this, informal waste pickers actively recover valuable resources from waste with minimal compensation from municipalities and private sector companies. ♻️

In particular, the main causes of inadequate waste disposal and management in Africa are weak strategic, institutional and organizational structures. This is because they have inadequate budgets; weak legislation and lack of implementation needed for waste management. Added to this is low public awareness and conflicts that lead to instability.

Despite these difficulties, several African countries are progressively adopting more sustainable modes of waste disposal and management technologies by taking advantage of emerging waste recycling technologies. For example, Ethiopia has transformed the Koshe landfill in Addis Ababa into a waste-energy plant. This means reusing 1,400 tonnes of waste per day to generate electricity. ♻️

Kenya is also leveraging emerging technologies to improve waste management and disposal approaches. The collection, sorting, composting, recycling of plastic and purchasing of waste from waste material collectors is currently being actively managed.

At GLOBALTEC we offer the execution of projects that use waste treatment technologies that can find applications in Africa. Among others would be those mechanical-biological treatment methods, which, supported by pre-treatment sorting techniques and emission selection and quality control techniques, can be adapted in African waste material treatment systems.

The sustainability in the agricultural sector

sostenibilidad

The 2030 Agenda has put the focus on sustainability, but what is sustainability? in 1987, the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations defined sustainability as growth that allows “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs ». It is a way of doing things that goes beyond production and is linked to the concept of society.

Agriculture is no stranger to sustainability, it has always sought to do « more with less » and to take care of its production factors: land, livestock, seeds, fertilisers… For agricultural production activity, sustainability is an everyday occurrence, reflected in the correct use of inputs, in the protection of land against erosion and in the care of the legacy.

New technologies are a further ally in sustainability, precision agriculture allows optimising the use of inputs, drones allow localised treatments and exhaustive control of growth, « Smart Farming », hydroponics, among others, are tools available to producers that favour sustainability.

The great challenge is to introduce the concept of sustainability in developing countries, adapting traditional methods in a way that respects nature. Globaltec is committed to including sustainable development in its projects.

At Globaltec we’re committed to Africa

Yesterday, the Secretary of State for Commerce presented the #AfricaHorizon strategy review. It was a pleasure to take part in the institutional roundtable, which featured the CEO of ICEXMaría Peña Mateos; the director of Economy and Trade for the Office of Economy and Trade at the Spanish Embassy in Dakar, Alejandro Ruiz; and the advisor to the Secretary of State for Commerce, Cristina Espi Vilchez. Representing Globaltec was our chairman and CEO, Javier Valero Artola.

Among the various messages conveyed at the meeting were: « The work carried out by the Secretary of State for Commerce is very constructive. It is essential for companies in Africa, a market that poses difficulties and positive challenges”, as well as, « We must help Spanish #companies make the most of this support to use both bilateral and multilateral #financing. The non-refundable FIEM product line is an example of this strategy; we must continue contributing human resources to the entire SEC structure”.

We are confident that the #AfricaHorizon strategy will help boost transactions on the African market and benefit a continent that presents great #opportunities and #challenges.

Globaltec and the new agricultural revolution

revolucion en la agricultura

It is vital to see agriculture as an interconnected network for the core purpose of producing food and meeting demand, reducing food waste. Introducing new technologies such as drones provides the opportunity to perfect this network and make it more efficient and sustainable. In fact, drones now play a key role and offer an innovative approach to monitoring crops, spraying and other functions.

With their ability to cover large areas in record time, drones allow problems to be detected quickly and corrective measures to be taken. The use of pesticides and fertilisers not only reduces costs but also minimises environmental impact. As well as monitoring crops and spraying, drones perform a crucial role by providing detailed land mapping. This topographic information is essential for optimising the distribution of resources and improving efficiency in agricultural management.

The classification of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, depends on the propulsion system, as follows:

  • Fixed-Wing UAVs: Efficient and autonomous, ideal for covering large areas.
  • Rotary-Wing UAVs: With rotating propellors, perfect for detailed surveys and following curved trajectories.

Furthermore, if multispectral cameras are incorporated, the monitoring ability is increased by making use of the electromagnetic spectrum. This wave energy is organised in different wavelength bands, beyond those visible to the human eye. Multispectral remote sensing, by measuring the energy reflected or emitted in multiple bands, offers a more complete image of the land and crops.

In short, the combination of drones and multispectral cameras is taking agriculture to new heights, providing a greater amount of data, which is also more precise, for efficient and sustainable management. The future of agriculture is in the air!
